Printmaking Elective

When it came to printmaking I wanted to incorporate something which i was interested in and also which would link well with my main course of study. Baring this in mind I decided on using my current project 'surveillance' as inspiration.
i already had the basic images which i wanted to use within my research as they were from my current project and also because I had studied the panopticon and surveillance within my critical studies essay for this year. Focusing my imagery on CCTV cameras and producing stencils, linocuts and etching onto plates.
The main idea from the printmaking elective was to produce some prints which i would be able to use within my design for my fashion module, as i figured that some of the prints produced could be transformed into prints which would be suitable for collections.

The Panopticon & Surveillance

WGSN

Typically as ever once I had arranged my work placement at home and taken my police check, about 2 weeks later I recieved an email from WGSN explaining how I could take up a work placement with them for the 3 weeks which I had asked for when we first started work placement searching.
I couldn't believe my luck I was so excited but it was impossible at this time to take them up on there offer because 1) I couldn't afford it whilst 2) I just didn't have the guts to let down my already arranged work placement.

I explained to them this and they offered me a phone interview still for a work placement in the summer time...

The interview went really well & they gave me some brilliant feedback but I did not get the summer placement, but they told me that they will keep my records on file. I am not going to give up on trend forecasting because it is something I majorly want to do, and particularly go into fabric sourcing.

Teaching?

Work Placement 27.04.09-15.05.09

After an unbelievable amount of research and emails into work placements I thought that I would take up my safe option and go back home, Grimsby and work within my old high school were I studied my GCSE's & A-Levels. I knew the teachers very well who taught Product Design which meant that I wouldn't be getting mundane tasks such as photocopying & making coffees, like most people who had travelled to London for 3 weeks.

I was assigned a timetable on the first day which explained that I would be teaching individuals from the age of 11-15. Majority of my time was spent teaching years 7 & 8 as these were the practical lessons and they needed constant guidance and one to one support, wheras the majority of year 9's and 10's were able to carry out their work on their own.

Teaching has always been something which I had considered but I was always 50/50 as to whether it was something I really wanted to do...

After this placement I figured that maybe one day I might go into teaching but not in Grimsby and definately not as soon as I have finished graduating.

I learnt throughout the work placement to what extent teachers have to go to, and it isn't as simple as walking into a classroom and basically telling them what they will be doing. They have mainly 55 minutes for a lesson and within that 55 minutes you have to get 20-25 students inside the classroom, address there uniform, take the register seat them & then have a 10 minute briefing to get them engaged and get their brains working. Then the lesson will start, finally we will have to pack up about 10 minutes before the lesson is over.

The days went very quick & overall my 3 weeks flew by.

Research Practices

This module is linked with critical studies- basically taking something academic which we learnt in critical studies and adding our own unique personal research onto it to create a final toile at the end and a range of designs. After the past 2 modules I have not been very keen on once we learnt the content of them I am very pleased with this module, we get to use new skills and I feel I will be better at pattern cutting once this project is completed.
I have decided to look into surveillance focusing on the panopticon, prison ground layouts & cameras. Trying to urge myself away from sportswear for a bit to expand my portfolio as I feel I have focused on sportswear alot recently. Im thinking big square for inspiration though.

When things get too much?

This second term work load has been unbearable, I feel like my passion has not been in any of my projects & I was really concerned with how I was feeling. I have been close this week to give everything up and start again doing something new.

When I chose this pathway what attracted me to do was the idea of tailoring and I was really interested in learning new things about tailoring or simply learning tailoring. But from this module I feel that I can't tell you much about tailoring that I already knew, I don't think im alone by saying i didn't understand how we were supposed to be 'innovative' and 'creative' when we were simply making samples? There was only a certain amount of ideas you can get from cording and piping? It felt as though we were creating trimmings and details rather than actual shapes and cuts. I would have benefitted more by being shown innovative cuts and moving darts around.

The there was the trend book which I was extremely pleased about, Trend forecasting is something which I really want to go into once I have graduated & I felt like this project was very useful in showing us the ways to go about it.

Art Gallery/Museum Visit

For the tailoring project we must visit galleries and museums for inspiration. This is not something which particularly excited as me there wasn't much inspiration in the museums or the art gallery which can be relate to fashion.

Although I did find this costume (left) which I will take the idea of exaggerated hips. This can be created with padding, wadding and also seam alterations instead of using boning.
